Christmas Advent 3D Printing 2017 Day #4 Faberdashery Translucent PLA's

It's Day #4 of the calendar, and today the gift is designed by Tom Van den Bon - It's a Christmas Lollipop. (I tweaked the design a little for this, read below to find out why) -


What material to print a lollipop?

The choice of filament is obvious for me. It must be multiple translucent colours for this great gift.

Some of the Faberdashery Translucent range of PLA filaments.

Faberdashery have some of the most mouth-watering translucent filaments available anywhere. They basically make printed objects look like ultra-perfect, coloured boiled sweets. Yummy – don’t eat the filament…

I printed the vase (above) back in 2014 with Faberdashery and other translucent colours, they can look really amazing.

I have already told you that Green is my favourite colour. Translucent plastic is my favourite type of 3D Printing filament.

When I look at any manufacturer’s range of filaments, I check if they have a number of translucent (not milky) colours available, this is because translucent filaments are reported to be quite tricky to manufacture. Almost every filament manufacturer (the real manufacturers, not just suppliers/re-sellers) I have talked to over the years says that a good translucent, coloured filament is quite difficult to produce consistently without flecks, bubbles etc. I see it as a strong indicator of quality control, if good quality translucent filaments are available.

Other translucent materials? - 

It’s quite common for PET/T/G materials to come in translucent colours (think of the many coloured plastic water/drinks bottles), but it is not quite so common for PLA to come as translucent. The very first PLA’s I ever used (made in China) were almost all translucent, not opaque at all.

For a frosted/translucent finish, you can use acrylic (PMMA) but that’s considerable more tricky to use. I’ll try to find a day/model to demonstrate out using PMMA at some point during this December advent training series.

The Faberdashery crystal colour pack is a great starting point to make sure you have a little of every colour to hand. It's goes a long way when you use it like I am doing here.

I'm using all Faberdashery colours in this model, for the stick and back I'll use Pearly White.

For the many swirls I'm using - Sour Cherry, Orange Fizz, Lemon Drop, Jade Green, Glacial Blue and Aurora.

This lollipop should look good in multiple colours and the design allows you to change colours during the print, for the stick, base and many lollipop swirls.

During model preparation I noticed the STL file had some errors. In the course of fixing those errors I decided to modify the model to have more stepped layers that could be coloured in a rainbow set of translucent colours. 

My version of the Lollipop design uses multiple stepped layers, so more colours can be used.


Printing advice -


I'm using the Prusa ColorPrint program (above) for this one as it will stop at set heights, move the nozzle to the front and ensures you don’t miss any of the critical colour change point.
It's really easy to use, just slice in the Prusa version of Slic3r, upload the Gcode output to the colorprint website and define when the program should pause and change the colour.

To work out what layer heights you need for each step you can load the STL model into a program like Netfabb. See below.


In the above image I have used the Cut Z slider to move the blue lint to where I cant my first colour change. Just make a note of the Z height (here it's 3.2mm) enter that into the ColorPrint webpage as seen above in the previous image.

Do the same thing again for each layer height you want a colour change. (5.2mm above).

ColorPrint also now allows you to use Gcode that has Z-hop (lift) enabled, it's smart enough to ignore all the extra z-hop moves and select real change of print layers.

You don't have to use the ColorPrint program, all it does is adds an M600 Gcode command at the change of layer heights you selected.

You can just look at any Gcode in a text editor (Textpad is great) - then do a search for G1 Z3.200 - this will just you to the Z height at 3.2mm. Just make sure you are selecting the change of layer and not the Z-hop of a travel move. You can ensure this by finding the last reference to the height you want before it changes to a higher constant.

For example, below in Green is an inserted M600 command at the Z3.2mm height.

This will make the printer move to the front and push out the filament, wait for to load another one, feed and then start printing again after you press the button (as long as your 3D Printer firmware supports M600 commands).

First colour change from Pearly white to Sour Cherry.

Sour Cherry done, nest is Orange Fizz - just continue until it's finished.

From the side you can see the colour changes, but from the top it's a multi-coloured Lollipop!

The Tree is looking really nice.


What settings did you use? - Faberdashery PLA is really easy to use. I use 194 Degrees C for Translucents. 

Print speed - it's good from 10-150mm/sec. Works fine in Direct drive or Bowden extruders.

Why use it? - PLA is an eco-friendly Bio-plastic. It's UV stable and works very well as a 3D printing material. Originally developed by Natureworks as a bio-plastic made from corn starch. many different grades exist. It can also be made of potato starch. 

It has a low glass transition temperature (~50 Degrees C) provides no warp in most situations. You don't need a heated bed, but it can assist when printing big (+150mm wide) objects.

Don't print in very low temperatures (below 15 Degrees C).

You can easily re-form post printed 3D objects with a hairdryer or heatgun, handy when you need to bend a tentacle or whatever.

Is it strong? - Yes, PLA has good strength, but can be a little brittle in it's raw form. Most manufacturers add impact modifiers to make the plastic more impact resistant. As with a lot of materials colour is added at around 2-5% volume, you can get both translucent and opaque PLA's from a wide range of manufacturers.


Is it easy to use/print - Yes. It can be quite runny (like honey) if you put the temperature up too high (~218+) I would recomend sticking to around 190 for normal printing speeds ~40mm/sec and if you do go fast ~120+mm/sec then consider putting the temperature over 210. My max temperature for PLA is 218. After this point it will start to rapidly degrade inside the nozzle. PLA will leave residue over time and it can be one of the most tricky to remove. The best method is with an Nylon Atomic Pull (Google it).

Do you have to dry it before/after use? - No. PLA is one of the few materials that can sit around at normal ambient temperatures, and not have a significant effect on printing capability. That said, keep it sealed, dry and away from strong light for maximum shelf life. Some people report that PLA becomes brittle over time, I have had every problem you could imagine with many materials, including a roll of PLA shatter over one summer. But it's very unusual.

Do i need a 'special' nozzle? - No, it's not abrasive, I have used it with all aidderent sizes of nozzle from 0.25 to 1.6mm - It will work fine with Stainless, Hardened steel, Copper, Ruby or Brass nozzles.


Does it smell when printing? - Yes. Usually just a slightly slight sweet smell, like popcorn. Unless it has a lot of additives, then it may smell more.

Does it come on a eco friendly spool? - No, But it comes on No spool! - Faberdashery coils filament in ~400mm diameter rings, they have a low bend radius and feed really well into 3D printer extruders. They have minimal extra packaging so you pay for the material not spools, cardboard and heavy delivery. Top marks for being enviromentally friendly. You just need to be careful in use so the coils do not tangle. I hang them over a big 400mm wide spool in use.

Conclusion for Faberdashery PLA  - It's very good material with the highest quality production you are likely to see. Some people really don't like the lack of a spool, but that can be managed if you are careful.


Day #4 Is Completed. Again it turned out exactly as I wanted, a Rainbow lollipop of multiple colours printed on a single extruder machine using ColorPrint M600 Gcode commands. Easy, and good fun.

The story for this one is all about how to design and print multi-colour objects with a 'normal' single extruder 3D Printer.

Christmas Advent 3D Printing 2017 Day #3 - PolySmooth & Edge

The original advent calendar from 2012 is on Thingiverse - designed by from Peter Leppik.

Here we are on Day #3 of the calendar, and today the gift is designed by Andries Smuts. It's a Christmas Rubber Ducky :)


The Christmas Rubber Ducky has been dual designed to be printed in multiple (different coloured) parts, or as a single (single colour) model.

I'm thinking that Polymaker Polysmooth is the ideal material for this gift. Anyone that has a rubber ducky, will want it to be smooth and shiny, so lets make that happen -


If I had more time (and the right Polysmooth colours) I would have printed out the multi-part model in different colour Polysmooth filaments and then assembled, and smoothed as one object. That would look just about perfect. But for now, as I have a very nice Polysmooth Yellow, lets use that.


Print time was 1 Hour and 22 minutes (it's +150% Sized)
0.15mm Layers and the 0.4mm Olsson Ruby High Flow (V6 Volcano) nozzle fitted to the TAZ6. (Remember to disable contact probe levelling if you use the Ruby on the TAZ6)

A quick sanding of the tail and bobble, to remove some plastic residue.


Smoothing time (with 99.9% Alcohol) was around 55 minutes. I'm still using the Original style Nebulizer. Polymaker now have a new style design that pushes out a lot more vapour. I'll have to upgrade soon as one has worn out, this last one is about to die (they are a consumable).


This could have been smoothed for another ~5 minutes and the final layer lines would have vanished on the body. You can always put it back in the Polysher for another smoothing session. For now, this is quite good enough.

The tree section for Day #3 is printed in a very stunning E3D EDGE filament called Krypton Green 46 (it's basically 'sparkling' shimmer-glitter? dark green, and it looks great.) It's really adding some bling to this tree.

E3D EDGE is easy to use, treat it as you would PETG or nGen. I'm sure I'll be talking more about PET/T/G type (polyethylene terephthalate) materials in the rest of this series at some point.

Printing advice -

I will focus the advice below on PolySmooth as it has a few more steps to use.

I plan to have a more complete Blog post about Polymaker Polysmooth and the Polysher machine in early 2018, for now, here are the highlights -

What settings did you use? - Go slightly lower temperature than a normal PLA, I use 200/190/185 Degrees C for PolySmooth. Almost every other setting you can use as you would PLA.

Remember if you are going to Alcohol vapour polish to use a higher number of top/bottom solid layers (I use 6 @ 0.2mm) to give a good, smooth, solid finish.

Print speed - it's good from 30-120mm/sec. Works fine in Direct drive or Bowden extruders.

Why use it? - PolySmooth is a PVB based Plastic. It's very similar to PLA when printing, but it can be smoothed using 100% Alcohol vapour - Specifically in the Polymaker Polysher machine. Other materials can be smoothed (ABS and Acetone - Not recommended), but the fact PolySmooth uses just normal Alcohol, rather than nasty solvents is a real bonus, and the reason why I like using it.

Is it strong? - Yes, the filament feels a lot like PLA. Maybe slightly more flexible and higher impact resistant. It produced very good definition prints. After polishing in Alcohol vapour the model surface is sticky (don't touch it!) You need to let it dry naturally. 
Even after it's touch dry it has not regained all it's strength. After many weeks of Polysmooth printing and polishing I realised that the models do end up hard, and stronger than the non-smoothed parts. You just need to wait or accelerate drying in a warm room etc.

Is it easy to use/print - Yes, you can use a slightly lower temperature PLA settings to start with. Polymaker Recommend using 210 to 230 Degrees C, but I would to start at 200 Degrees C and plan to bring that down to near 190 when you get skilled at using it. As usual, tune retraction distance and temperature to limit oozing. 


Above was my Temperature testing using Clear PolySmooth. I had the best results around 185 Degrees C.

Do you have to dry it before/after use? - Ideally, Yes - Keep it dry and sealed in the bag, it will take on moisture and that will affect print quality. Polysmooth is hydroscopic, it wants to take on water from the atmosphere. A 'damp' Polysmooth filament will tend to pop and crack as you extrude it out of the nozzle. You can dry it out and use it, but try very hard to keep it dry and sealed whenever it's not being used.

I'm still not totally sure if it's affected by light before use, I will ask Polymaker at some point. But for now I always keep my Polysmooth in a sealed bag with desiccant in the original Polymaker cardboard box.

Do i need a 'special' nozzle? - No, it's not abrasive, I have used it with all aidderent sizes of nozzle from 0.25 to 1.6mm - It will work fine with Stainless, Hardened steel, Copper, Ruby or Brass nozzles. Use it it as you do PLA.

Another really good and handy thing about Polysmooth is that you can print quite chunky layers, the smoothing will make 0.2mm layers 'disappear' and look like 0.0mm layers :)

Does it smell when printing? - No, No smell at all. Not even a slight sweet smell like PLA. 

Does it come on a eco friendly spool? - No, It's not marked with what plastic it's made of and it does not have a Recycle symbol :( - Vacuum sealed bag and in a very high grade 'Premium cardboard box'.

Conclusion for Polymaker Polysmooth  - It's very good material and works perfectly with the Polysher machine. It would be nice to see more suppliers make PVB materials, so we have more choice of colours and maybe some sustainable filament spools being used / less packaging and different weight spools.

In 7+ months of use, I have still not had any failures using PolySmooth, or any nozzle jams. It's a really nice and easy to use material. I'm using it a lot for all sorts of projects, concept product models and demonstration equipment.


Day #3 Completed. I think it turned out exactly as I wanted, a rubber ducky that looks like it could have been 'production made in China' :-/ At least it has another story attached to it when someone asks - 'That can't be 3D Printed! how is it so smooth?

I didn't mention before But I'm printing this entire Christmas advent tree at +150% size, so it's really rather big... I'm slightly concerned.

E3D Scaffold - soluble support material testing and 3D Printing model challenge

Testing out Scaffold - Soluble Support Material from E3D.

The team at E3D recently sent me some production reels of Scaffold, the soluble support material for desktop 3D Printing. It's now almost released and should be available soon on the E3D website

I'm testing it out and also seeing what's been changed from the Beta release earlier in the year.

Sanjay at E3D said it has had a few modifications to the viscosity and also compatibility with materials. It's tuned to work well with Edge (PET based) and Nylon materials, but will also work with PLA and ABS.

I proposed a scaffold challenge in the video below, and E3D responded. They have kindly offered some £40 discount vouchers for their webshop as a prize for the most interesting or challenging ideas.


If you have a 3D model that you believe would challenge Scaffold (it's mostly aimed as a dissoluble support material) but can also work well as peal-away support, then let me know in the comments below, over on YouTube or on Twitter @Richrap3d

Also feel free to tell me of your experience with using support material - either using the same material or as a dual extruder setup with a secondary material as support.

Give me some time and I will report back with success or failure and hopefully some print advice or tips for using Scaffold in different 3D Printers.

I'm going to also test it out with some models I have struggled to 3D Print over the years, I'll try to do that on a selection of printers, nozzles and extruders too.

A really good support material is still a major goal for desktop 3D Printers, so it's exciting when a new product becomes available, I'll be sure to let you know how I get on. Maybe this is the one?

Trying a different type of 3D Printing video update - need feedback

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get some feedback on the way I do things - please help - thanks.

I thought I would try a slightly different type of 3D Printing update - I'm still trying to work out how I should continue with project updates / review's and advice about 3D Printers / materials and stuff.


Feel free to give me any feedback - good points / bad points and any ideas of what you would like to see from a 3D Printing YouTube Channel and/or blog etc.

I keep on going with the Blog because sometimes a video can be a great end result and a blog can be easier to follow and read. Blog posts do require many times more work than a quick update video, so I'm trying to find the balance - Do you read my Blog posts? of just watch my videos?

In the past many of my blog posts were considered too long (big developments / review's ) or TLDR.

I don't want to fall into the trap of doing great long video's (unless that's something people want) - under 15 minutes seems like a good level.

Maybe I should do more 5 minute ones? (Even this one below turned out longer than I expected, but is short 'news' actually useful?)

I'm currently updating YouTube, Blogger, Twitter and G+ and often that seems like too much.

I have no interest in posting to Facebook - is that wrong?

Anyway back to the point of this post - A roundup of things that are going on in the community, and projects / products, components and materials I'm looking at right now -
